One of the biggest hobbies that I’ve expanded on this year has been organizing my home. I’ve always enjoyed having order, but I’ve taken it a step further this year. Keep reading to see solutions for a few messy situations. Hint: it involves dividers, totes, and dressers to make finding what everything I need easier.
Bathroom
I have a makeup organizer (affiliate) that goes on my bathroom vanity which I find helpful for keeping all the brushes and tools in order. The lipstick organizer (affiliate) on the side helps me see all of my options. I found I wasn’t using some of my lipsticks without having everything laid out for me. A pet peeve of mine is everything rolling around in a drawer where it isn’t easy to find the items I need. Drawer dividers solution this issue by putting the items most likely to roll in their own sections. The long clear expandable drawer dividers are great for makeup and fit perfectly in the long skinny drawers of my apartment. It’s also great for separating dental items such as floss picks and teeth whitening strips. I prefer the shorter dividers for skincare products because the sections are wider.
It’s a great to utilize plastic bins to hold cleaning and hair products as well as keep them separated. I’m not sure why but I don’t want my deep conditioners near my toilet cleaners. While I know they won’t get contaminated, I feel better having them separate. My hot tools are in an over the door holder (affiliate); they are hardly used so it’s good to have them up and out of the way to make space for items I use more often.
Organizing my home: Closet
Just to start off, I know my closet is still not super tidy. However, it’s a vast improvement from what it was a few months ago! I bought more totes and the dresser to store clothes that I don’t hang up which made all the difference. The dresser was pricier but it’s really worth it for my closet since I don’t have low shelves to store folded clothes. I repurposed an old skinny, metal shelf from college to store my shoes, painting supplies, and overnight bag. I used to have folded clothes on this stand which was a horrible idea because they were constantly falling off the sides. Now, those clothes are tucked neatly away in my dresser which also displays a few small makeup bags and headbands. I also made the most of free space above the dresser with a pants hanger (affiliate).
The wooden shoe stand was built by my dad for me years ago and I still use it today. I purchased the four shoeboxes with clear windows online from the Container Store. While I like having the shoeboxes by my front door to catch all the commonly worn shoes (flip flops, sneakers, walking shoes, sandals), I don’t appreciate that the sticker on the clear door left so much paper and residue that now the door is foggy after using goo be gone. I have tried cleaning it again but it won’t go back to being clear. For that reason I don’t recommend it but I’ll still link it just beware that it will not stay clear!
Kitchen
The kitchen pantry is still a work in progress when it comes to organizing my home. I’d find myself not remembering I had small rice pouches since they were shoved in the back of my cabinet. Adding the clear bins (affiliate) helped make it easy to see more of what is in my pantry at once. The tiered vitamin stand (affiliate) to made it easier to actually take my vitamins; since, they were shoved in the back so I would forget. The other clear bin I have is in under the sink helping to fight the clutter of all the spray bottles. I’m thinking of getting another over the door organizer to hold plastic bags I use as trash bin liners. If I end up getting it I’ll update the post with a link here.
This was how I organize my home, let me know in the comments if any of these tips were helpful or if you have your own tips and products to share.
