I’ve been growing out my golden brown dyed hair for almost a year now. I originally was going to use a semi-permanent hair dye to get it closer to my natural darker brown hair color. However, I was concerned dying may damage it more. So, I used a hair color depositing conditioner in a dark brown shade to temporarily achieve darker hair. The darker brown color has been lasting for about a month and half before it completely fades and needs to be reapplied.
The Color Depositing Process
The Moroccanoil color depositing deep conditioner in Cocoa needs to sit for 7 minutes to stain your hair. Afterwards, you should completely wash it out so that the water is mostly clear. It is very messy and stains skin, tile, clothing, etc. It’s best if you apply it in the shower and wear gloves. I often wear an older t-shirt in case it stains (same shirts I used to wear when I would use permanent hair dye, but these stains generally come out since it’s not bleach). I like to also keep it stored in a plastic bag under my cabinet just in case of leaks. Also, I try to wipe any stains off as soon as I see it on my skin or on the tile. While it will come out, it can take time and effort.
Note: I have tried dying at the roots to see if it will deposit color to grey hairs. Unfortunately, the color does not take to those strands and I don’t recommend using it to cover grey hair.
The Darker Hair Color Results
I sleep with my hair in bonnet or with a microfiber towel over my pillow on the first night. This is to prevent any color transfer onto my pillow or clothes.
